Our mechanics swear by this little piece of molded plastic. They have used every tire lever under the sun, and this is their favorite. It is too big for some seat packs, but it is really intended for shop use. There are shorter ones that are easier to carry with you that will work in an emergency, but so will a quick-release lever/skewer. It won't scratch your rim or pinch the tube.
